A big source of antioxidants

Honey contains a variety of plant compounds that act as antioxidants. Some types of honey contain antioxidant levels comparable to those found in fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants help protect the body from cell damage caused by free radicals.

Free radicals contribute to the aging process and may also play a role in the development of chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. Research suggests that the antioxidant compounds found in honey, known as polyphenols, may help protect against oxidative stress and could contribute to cardiovascular health.

Antibacterial and anti-fungal properties

Research has shown that honey can kill unwanted bacteria and fungus. It naturally contains hydrogen peroxide, an antiseptic. Its effectiveness as an antibacterial or anti-fungal varies depending on the honey, but it’s more than a folk remedy for these kinds of infections.

Heal wounds

Honey is used in medical settings to treat wounds because it’s been found to be an effective germ killer and also aids in tissue regeneration.

Phytonutrient Powerhouse

Phytonutrients are natural compounds found in plants that help protect them from damage. For example, some phytonutrients repel insects, while others protect plants from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

The phytonutrients found in honey are responsible for many of its antioxidant properties, as well as its antibacterial and antifungal activity. They are also believed to contribute to the immune-supporting and potential health-promoting benefits associated with raw honey.

Help for Digestive issues

Honey has traditionally been used to support digestive health and is sometimes used to help relieve digestive problems such as diarrhea, although scientific evidence remains limited. Research has shown that honey may be effective against Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a bacterium associated with various stomach disorders.

Honey is also considered a natural prebiotic, meaning it helps nourish the beneficial bacteria that live in the gut. These beneficial microorganisms play an essential role not only in healthy digestion but also in supporting overall health and well-being.

Soothe a Sore Throat

Caught a cold? Try a spoonful of honey. Honey is a traditional remedy for soothing a sore throat. You can also add it to a warm cup of tea with lemon to help relieve the discomfort associated with the common cold.

Honey may also help suppress coughs. Research has shown that it can be as effective as dextromethorphan, a common ingredient found in over-the-counter cough medicines. For soothing relief, consume one to two teaspoons of honey.
